When it comes to modern funk, there is one artistic foible that the majority of artists often fail to address; subtlety, or more specifically, the lack thereof. Family Vision Care’s Careful, a sublimely fluid hybrid of jazz, funk, soul and dance music, reveals just how great the results can be when practitioners successfully utilise this rare concept. A prime example of that truly rare album which is somehow completely inoffensive whilst remaining imminently thrilling, Careful effortlessly combines taut arrangements and tantalising grooves with excellent song-writing. There are several elements that contribute to the album’s electric ingenuity, but Gary Harrison’s vocals are the key factor. Smooth and versatile in both capacity and application, Harrison’s vocals dart around a variety of hooks and layered vocal melodies on the afro-Cuban jazz-soul of ‘Silent Souls’ as well as on the jubilant rush of ‘Sweet Soul Music’, boasting genuine charisma and world-class melodies. It’s refreshing to meet a singer with grace and subtlety in any genre, but in a style ruled over by James Brown and Prince, it’s practically miraculous. The remaining genius of the album can be attributed to Family Vision Care’s other dominant player Thomas Berghaus, whose arrangements and instrumentation are equipped with the visionary clarity of production more akin to modern jazz records than soul/funk works. His flair is evident across all the tracks and elevates Harrison’s already-stellar melodies, be it with the chimes and wood-block percussion of the title track, or the cavalcade of flourishes that litter acoustic soul-rocker ‘Dancing with Marvin’. With titles like ‘Sweet Soul Music’ and ‘Dancing with Marvin’, Careful was clearly a labour of love in the name of soul/funk music, but in Careful, Family Vision Care have created their own modern classic.
